Zirconia
Layered Zirconia
Layered zirconia is a high-strength dental restoration with a durable zirconia core (substructure) covered by aesthetic porcelain layers, combining zirconia's toughness with natural-looking translucency for crowns and bridges, especially in the front teeth.
Material: Zirconium dioxide, a type of ceramic.
Purpose: To cover and protect a damaged tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and size.
Types:
Monolithic: Made from a single block of zirconia, making it extremely strong and chip-resistant. It's a good choice for back teeth that handle heavy chewing.
Layered: A layer of porcelain is fused over the zirconia for enhanced translucency and aesthetics. This is a popular option for front teeth where appearance is a priority.
Advantages
Strength and durability: Zirconia is exceptionally strong, with monolithic crowns being nearly unbreakable and highly resistant to wear and tear.
Aesthetics: They are naturally tooth-colored and translucent, allowing them to blend in well with natural teeth.
Biocompatibility: Zirconia is biocompatible, making it a good choice for patients with metal sensitivities and unlikely to cause allergic reactions.
Minimal tooth preparation: In many cases, less enamel needs to be removed to place a zirconia crown, preserving more of the natural tooth structure.
Longevity: With proper care, they can last a lifetime, with many patients seeing results for 10-20 years or more.
